I am rather like a mosquito in a nudist camp; I know what I want to do, but I don't know where to begin." - Stephen Bayne, Episcopal Bishop
I'm ashamed to admit that I probably spend more time fretting over the length of my to-do list than I do in tackling the items and projects on it. I recently bought 2 books on time management and creating an efficient personal environment, and guess what - reading and implementing their wisdom has just ended up as another item on my to-do list!
This month's edition of COMENSAnews is designed to save you time. Instead of having to scrawl through a lengthy PDF document, you can read a quick synopsis of each of the articles in the newsletter and simply click on the links to those articles that you find of interest. |

| Belinda Davies, COMENSA's President, leads us into the crux of the matter - how we and our clients cope with modern life. Nick Wilkins and Dr Sunny Stout Rostron take a detailed look at the challenges facing Business Coaches, while Michelle Clarke gives tips on how to create a strong support team. |
| sdf |
| We have great contributions: from Leonie Prinsloo on the various stages of the development of the brain, and how best to stimulate it, to Shanaaz Maijet and Veronica Stephens with varying perspectives on Leadership. Please make sure you read John Paisley's tips on how to create a strong profile, and give some consideration to supporting his community service initiative which focuses on the educational sector. |

The President's Position on Overload
by Belinda Davies
Players, Managers, Mentors, Owners, Referees! All of us play so many roles at one time and need to keep all the proverbial balls in the air while appearing to be calm, serene and under control - although under the surface (like the duck) we are paddling away furiously. |

"The best way to build a good circuit is to fire it, attend to the mistakes, then fire it again, over and over. Struggle is not an option. It's a biological requirement."
Daniel Coyle, The Talent Code. |
|
|
| |
| Struggle is an important part of learning, but not all struggle is useful. If you're in way over your head and feel like you're in the fog of war, lashing out randomly to try to perform a task, then you're not developing skill and you're potentially even developing a neural habit of doing the skill incorrectly. |
| |
| Focused struggle means that you're struggling consciously, carefully and deliberately, noticing your mistakes, learning from them and adjusting to do better all the time. |
| |
| What errors and less-than-great performances are you now noticing that you've been making and what are you learning from them? |
| |
| How will you take account of those errors and flaws and adjust your behavior to do better next time? |
| |
| This coaching tip is extracted from The Bottom-line on Daniel Coyle's, "The Talent Code" the latest release at The Bottom-line Bookclub. COMENSA Members get an exclusive 40% off when you join the Bottom-line Bookclub. |

Sunny Shines a Light on...Business Coaching - Going Beyond the Balls
By Nick Wilkins & Dr Sunny Stout Rostron
You're a 40-year-old executive heading an operational division of a large company. You get to work at 07:30, scan the business news, then respond to 57 priority e-mail messages that you can't delegate to your line managers or PA. |
Michelle's Top Tip for making the MOST of your COMENSA Membership: Create Your Business Support Team
By Michelel Clarke
As an A-Type personality, I'm a go-it-alone kind of person. Whilst this attitude has some merit, it has got me into some hot water in business. Not inviting the wise council and expertise of a trusted group of supporters has cost me time and money. |
The Seduction of Leadership
By Shanaaz Maijet
I have been in deep reflection on my own leadership practice as I look at my past year, making the transition from a senior role in government administration. In recent times I have also been struck by what informs the South African mood and psyche about followership of our leaders at all cost. |
Get the Ball Rolling - Create a Great Profile
By John Paisley
Your Coaching Profile is a powerful marketing tool. It pays to spend time and effort on it! (and to revise it annually). It is often the first (and sometimes only) "evidence" which will obtain coaching work opportunities for you. I have been able to read many hundreds of coach's profiles, and have distilled my observations into this guide. And, of course, this is only my opinion! |
Back to basics
By Leonie Prinsloo
I had the privilege of seeing a newborn baby, only three days old. I looked at him and was amazed at the perfection. The physical development of children is commented on and something that you immediately see. What about the mental/brain development? |
Wearing all the Hats Successfully
By Marja Botha van Doorn
One of the challenges in starting and growing a small business is fitting in all the work. You wear so many hats, and have so many details to handle; it is hard to accomplish everything each day. |
Hands off the Balls
By Veronica Stephens
Management as we know it evolved into a fine art of orchestrating the various demands placed on the bearer of such position. Legislative, behavioural and physical demands in tandem with it's own challenges. |
Juggling Asteroids
By Ivor Shafkolsky
The very title of this month's theme has thrown all my balls into disarray .The title recognises but four of the roles that each individual may be managing at any one time. |
Making No Balls About Making a Difference
By John Paisley
As a conforming non-conformist, I am determined not to write about the World Cup.
And it has been a demonstration of the potential in South Africa. We have seen people come together to celebrate, to build stadia, roads, to queue for tickets. It seems to have created a sense of unity that many long for... |
